Music/Feeling

Music plays an important part in my classes. Music can help us get the essence of a particular rhythm very effectively. It engages our feelings, which is vital if we are to dance with heart, which we must do if we are to dance our dream awake.

My unending gratitude goes to all the artists who create the music and go out there on the edge where everything worthwhile is created. Have a listen/watch the videos below to hear the kinds of music you might hear at my class, and scroll down to read more on the subject.

All kinds of feelings can and do arise as we dance the wave and it is really helpful to be able to release the feeling energy through sound (moaning, crying, sobbing, shouting, giggling, laughing...) as well as physical movement. Self-consciousness of all kinds can prevent us from really letting our feelings out (ahem, this IS Britain!!), and having loud music playing enables people to just "let it all hang out", giving us the "auditory privacy" we may need for our self consciousness to not get the better of us!

It's also quite possible to dance the wave with no music, by tuning into the energy we feel in our body at any time, which will always have a dance if we pay attention to what we hear/see/feel inside and move what is there. So sometimes I teach for a while without music and this can help dancers to tune in more finely to their current state of being/dancing.

I love and play all kinds of sounds; acoustic, electronic, with and without vocals, all kinds of world music, folk, classical, electronic, house, trance, recognizable pop from the 70s to the present day and stuff you will never have heard before. People often say they love the music and I'm happy to let you know who it's by etc so you can get it to listen (and dance to!) at home.

Whether you love, like, hate, dislike or are indifferent to the music that is playing in any given moment on the dance floor, use it to engage more fully with YOU AND YOUR DANCE!
